Welbeck sends 10-man United through

Danny Welbeck's second-half goal proved enough to send 10-man Manchester United into the Carling Cup fourth round with a 1-0 win over Wolves.

Even with a man extra following Fabio's dismissal for deliberately bringing down Michael Kightly after half an hour, Wolves were able to make little impact at Old Trafford.

Welbeck won the match by finishing off a flowing move midway through the second half, tucking his shot comfortably past Marcus Hahnemann.

All in all, with the contest turning into a keenly-fought affair instead of the sterile stalemate that had gone before, the sending-off was no bad thing, except for Fabio, who cut a dejected figure as he made his way off the field.

Michael Owen had United's best chance before the interval but could only turn a header straight at Marcus Hahnemann, who experienced his own Foster moment just before the break when his attempted clearance was charged down by Welbeck. Fortunately for the veteran American, it bounced to safety.

The goal, when it eventually came, just emphasised the gulf in class. Wolves thought they had the situation under control when Darron Gibson rolled a sideways pass to Michael Carrick 30 yards out.

But within an instant, the England midfielder had created space for Welbeck, whose first time pass was returned in equally promising manner by Owen, who succeeded in providing his young team-mate with an opportunity to run onto the ball, clear of the Wolves defence.

The finish was first-time too. Straight into the bottom corner, as befits a player currently making the graduation from England Under-19 to Under-21 duty and surely destined for even higher honours one day.

Welbeck departed to a standing ovation from United's lowest crowd for four years - which still exceeded 50,000 - for another teenager, Norwegian Joshua King, of whom very big things are expected.

Toure ensures City progress

Manchester City captain Kolo Toure steered the club into the fourth round of the Carling Cup by scoring the winner in extra-time to beat Fulham 2-1 at Eastlands.

Toure got on the end of a corner from substitute Martin Petrov to head home in the 111th minute.

It was his first goal since his arrival this summer from Arsenal and a welcome one at that after Gareth Barry had cancelled the opener from Fulham's Zoltan Gera.

Fulham took the lead in the 34th minute with a goal out of nothing. Gera picked up a loose ball 30 yards out and smashed a marvellous half-volley beyond Shay Given.

City responded in the 41st minute and David Stockdale did well to punch away Craig Bellamy's inswinging free-kick from the edge of the area.

Mark Hughes' men started the second half brightly and Carlos Tevez got on the end of a cross from Nigel de Jong after 46 minutes, only to head wide.

City drew level in the 52nd minute when the Fulham goalkeeper lost his bearings as Bellamy delivered another corner and Barry scored with a header at the back post.

This was a difficult spell for Roy Hodgson's side and Barry tested Stockdale with a header following a cross from Pablo Zabaleta.

Barry then got into a good position on the edge of the area with a minute to go but his effort went wide and the match went into extra-time.

Bjorn Helge Riise almost put Fulham ahead in the 109th minute, his angled drive going narrowly past the post but two minutes later Toure scored the winner when he got on the end of a corner from Petrov to head the ball powerfully into the net.
